Text of Michaël RIDDELL

To have an immediate image of the hydrological conditions of a big part of the Pond Parade Liguro Provençal was until now obtained only by the remote detection, but this information, however promising it is in the future, offers us at present that a partial knowledge, because it does not inform us about the composition of waters, for example in nutrient salts or the other substances necessary for the navy productivity. We can neither determine composition "planctonique", basic element of the biologic chains.
It is to mitigate this lack of knowledge, but also to have a better knowledge of the extraordinary fauna which is there, which we organized since 1996 operation Delphis.
It is very evident that such an investigation not maybe realized as if one has an important number of vessels from which are made the same day takings and measure what is outside the possibilities of the means of the classic oceanography.
But the awareness of the importance of a durable development for the future generations to protect maritime environment and particularly life which develops in our sea, allows to mobilize the sailors owners of boats given spontaneously to the operation Delphis.

Informed by preparatory meetings, they lend themselves gladly and with seriousness to the realization of takings and the simple measures which every warned sailor is capable of making, as watch the coherence of obtained analytical results.

Delphis 98 : Location of boats

A program established with the scientific team of the International University of the Sea which, after recovery of samples, makes the analysis of it and proceeds to the interpretation of measures. The confrontation of curves isoplèthes translating distribution and dynamics of the chemical and biologic constituents of waters, with the meditative satellite pictures simultaneously, is guarantees of the value of obtained scientific results.

That is why, in the course of the years, we can have a very complete information, obtained in different weather conditions and whose images confirm. This non-existent information before is established this mode of investigation, can only enrich scientific patrimony and favor by a better knowledge the protection of the Mediterranean Sea.

RIMMO is delighted also at the creation of the Research centre on Cetaceans-Marineland, steered by the Dr Alexandre Gannier, who proceeded to the interpretation of observations realized during the operation Delphis 98.
Delphis allows all the sailors or " people of the sea ", fascinated and concerned by our maritime patrimony, to participate in the process of creation of a Mediterranean sanctuary for the maritime mammals, supported by RIMMO since 1992.
This action also allowed to popularize scientific data in which a lot of participants and supports of the operation would have never been able to have access.
Thank you in all what prepare, relieve information, participate and bring their enthusiasm to this beautiful company.
