Globicephala melas

In adulthood, globicéphales measures 5 - 6 m and weighs one in 3 tons. Round, bulbous forehead. Dorsal fin advanced and tilted towards the back, often raises the tail or the head outside the water. Globicéphale.jpg (3241 octets)

globi 4.jpg (14972 octets) One finds him especially in deep waters and the groups are sometimes allowed float in the surface favoring observation. The young people jump sometimes but rarely the adults. The black globicéphale breathes several times before sounding. Dives owed rarely more than 10 minutes except during the food. The breath is visible sometimes and can reach a metre in height.
The food is consisted almost exclusively of squids for which it fishes until 500 m of depth. It is an extremely sociable animal that one meets in troops from 10 to several hundred individuals. This cohesion is at the origin of grounding en masse. The females which can live more than 70 years give birth that every 2 or 3 years. Males exceed rarely 50 years. Two different populations of globicéphale black populate the waters of the globe.
