SUNDAY JULY 13 : DELPHIS II IN SIGHT

(Var matin of july 15, 1997)

The operation "Delphis 97" mobilized many yachtmen of the Var. Objective: to enter the Cetacea at broad coasts provençales.

During all the day, thirty five boats left Port-Frejus will go in a perimeter delimited well for each of four miles out of four, in sea of ligurie, where during the summer, the marine mammals are numérous.

On the superb sailing ship "Passages", we are seven to await the departure impatiently. Time is ideal: the sky is blue and the glassy sea. Philippe Manon, president of the Fisherman-Yachtmen of Port-Frejus, explains that for "Delphis 96", the day had to be deferred twice because of the bad time. Has midday, each ship must be in position in his zone to carry out precise observations. Around 11 hours, five dolphins appear with 100 meters of the boat, on port side. We hasten to make noise in order to attract them, but they distance. risso4.jpg (11015 octets)

Has midday, each ship must be in position in his zone to carry out precise observations. Around 11 hours, five dolphins appear with 100 meters of the boat, on port side. We hasten to make noise in order to attract them, but they distance.

A hour later, we are in place. To evaluate the transparency of water, a disc of "plastic secchi", is ballasted and plunged in the sea. It is inserted up to 25 meters of depth, which enables us to know that the water of our sector contains little plankton, and thus that we have little chance to meet of large mammals sailors.

We start the turn of our square of sixteen miles square. The radio outputs the comments of the other present: the sailing ship "Faro", more in the east, sees a whale towards 13h30; "Asolare", in the east him also of our position, sails in the medium of some dolphins.

While starting our return, four dolphins "risso" (white back, black aileron) turns around "Passages". Further, the children aboard sailing ship "Stella-Husbands" shout us in heart: " One has seen a whale!".

The luckiest were the tuna fishermen, but such a day is lost for nobody, and especially not for the marine mammals, that the demonstration "Delphis" aims at protecting, in particular of their worst enemy, drifting nets.
