next 23 July, take part in Delphis 2000,
to protect the dolphins and the whales in the
Mediterranean. |
The summer arrives. Know you that our
Mediterranean, in this season, constitutes one of the strongest concentrations of dolphins
and of whales in the world?
For as much, they are constantly threatened (pollution, industrial fishing, etc).
Since 1992, with the active support of Marineland , RIMMO (Maritime
International Reserve in the Western Mediterranean) militates without slackening for
the creation of a true sanctuary of marine mammals in the Western Mediterranean, off our
coasts. And since 1996, the Delphis Operation mobilizes the sailors and the yachtmen to
collect in one day a maximum of observations and taking away at sea.
This sanctuary officially was finally created on 25 last November thanks to a treaty
signed in Rome by France, Italy and Monaco.
This treaty directs today RIMMO towards two essential missions.
 | Pedagogy, while taking part in the development of payments and charters
of good control at sea and by making known them with all those which use this maritime
space;

| Search, with two complementary approaches;
 | . the first, carried out by scientists, studies with precision the
environment and the mammals of the Mediterranean starting from a number of limited points
of observation, but covering the near total of the zone of the sanctuary.

| . the second, more directed towards general public by organizing
each year in July the Delphis Operation, allowing to obtain specific information on a less
wide zone, but starting from a number of points of observation much more significant.

Objectives of Delphis 2000
| . to sensitize the public opinion on the problems of protection of the
Mediterranean by associating with scientific search all the in love ones with the
Mediterranean;

| . to make known the extraordinary richness and the diversity of the
marine mammals which live at broad our coasts by organizing a true festival of the sea.

The scientific program of Delphis 2000
You are perhaps not a scientific expert but you can, while taking part in
the Delphis Operation, to bring, the time of an output at sea, very invaluable
information. From your boat, and inside the square of 4 miles which will be affected for
you, it will be enough to raise your observations of marine mammals and to take some sea
water samples, starting from extremely simple instructions.
Before the departure, you will égaIement receive a formation which will enable you to
acquire enthralling connaisances in connection with the marine mammals: how to recognize
them, how to observe their practices and their behaviors, etc.
While joining us for the Delphis Operation 2000, you will spend one
day unforgettable and very useful for the environment of our Mediterranean.
